How to handle the “Oh you Homeschool”.

Once you start homeschooling, be prepared, somewhere, sometime it will come up. When people find out that you’re homeschooling you probably will get the eye roll or at least a judging look. I know you should probably just not worry what people think and not let it bother you, but I can’t do that. It bothers me.

So, sometimes when I get that reaction it’s good to nonchalantly throw a few things into the conversation that will enlighten them a bit about homeschooling. First, they may have this negative view because they don’t think that your kids will be socializing enough with kids their age, or maybe that they won’t learn as well, or they won’t be able to get into college. Whatever it may be, I try and throw in a comment that might help the negativity about homeschooling to be thrown off a bit. Mention something that your proud of your kids for accomplishing. Or maybe the flexibility of it. If we are out and about for noon and I get the look, or the ‘y’all off of school today?’ My come back is that we homeschool and they are already done with their lessons for the day. Or that we homeschool and this is part of their learning experience for the day, they’ve got a lot of math at the grocery store.

Most of all though, whatever your comeback or lack of one, just be proud to homeschool! You get to make a curriculum to fit each child, they learn and retain more when they learn more what they’re interested in when they’re in to it, you have a flexible schedule, you can do lessons at the park or the grocery store if you want and your kids can talk to all ages of people because they are not only socialized with only kids but the whole environment around them. Homeschool is a way of life, not a 8-3 thing, be proud of what you’re doing for your kids. It’s not easy, but the rewards are worth it! You get to spend so much more time with your kids and be closer as a family.

Anyway, my takeaway is, if you can let it roll off, more power to you, but if not, just be prepared for it and it will be easier to handle the eye roll. And mostly don’t let it get you down. You’re doing a great job!
